Thomas and Anna Karina Klinkert Sennefelder

This interview with Zoumba (aka Pape Samba Sow) was performed in January 2015, here in Freiburg. Zoumba lives in St. Louis, Senegal, professional storyteller and writer. He is founder and president of the Association COCONS (Companions Storytellers of NORTH: Senegal). At the University of St. Louis, he often gives lectures on oral narration. In January 2015 Zoumba was the guest of the university program SFB 2015 in Freiburg (Germany).

Thomas Klinkert :  Zoumba, in this research program, we examine the leisure and idleness in Latin "otium" in French "leisure". In different languages, there are different concepts that do not always mean the same thing. So we've invited you as a renowned artist and an African cultured. Is there otium in your culture? If so, in what context does it fit in your work as an artist?

ZOUMBA: We can not always distinguish leisure in many operations, because everything we do in Africa has a fluid form. When the shepherd works and takes care of his sheep or goats, he lives permanently with them, so it is difficult to say when the shepherd does not work. he is and remains a shepherd. Same with the woodcutter who lives with nature, with the trees, he cut the trees, and even if he does nothing, the trees fall, and then he sleeps with them, on a bed of leaves, so he is a part of nature.

But we also have what we call leisure moments and moments where not sleeping we do nothing. We imagine that we are free and that time is ours. For the others, I do not work but I'm right here, alone or in a group, all of them with me. At home in Saint-Louis, Senegal - and in general throughout my Africa, if you have nothing to do and that we are really "free" we boil tea, a Senegalese tea that is to say, prepared in a very special way. This is because we like to take our time. We normally drink three differently dosed cups of tea. We do not use a gas stove or an electric stove, but a fire of wood or coal, which of course takes time. I mean, the only moment you really feel "free", in your sense, is when we are not alone but with others.

TK: Is that tea a ceremony?

ZOUMBA - Rather a ceremonial, a kind of ritual. And if I only just start making tea, it means I want to receive visits, to have company. We are afraid of loneliness. It is said that this is the real purpose of making tea. This shows that the Senegalese do not like being alone. Hardly we begin to take tea in the courtyard or in the kitchen, people flock, probably because of the smell ...

TK: Does the smell attract others?

ZOUMBA: - Yes. If someone is making tea in a radius of one kilometer, I know because I feel it. And I say: "I go" This is necessarily a prompt We are in Senegal, in a sense, all addicted to tea.

Anna Karina Sennefelder:  And in the commonly spoken language in Senegal, the Wolof, how do you say “otium”?

ZOUMBA: - There are a lot of words, but I do not know which exactly corresponds to the meaning of “otium”. If you are in the entertainment and pleasure, then we can say "fo". Fo is the verb. "Po", its noun, is a hobby used for fun. If one is in a leisure of loneliness, then you say "weet".

AKS: And how would you say it in French? Would you say leisure or simply the term otium?

ZOUMBA: - No. This is a term in the language of the learned. For the Otium, when I received the invitation to come to give a lecture about it in Freiburg, I only consulted dictionaries. We simply say leisure or hobbies.

TK: In our research, we found that the definition of leisure often has an inherent ambivalence. In German, for example, there is, besides the favorable hobbies, relaxation which is potentially vicious. people often criticize hobbies because it is assumed they saddle the energy, call the sinful temptation, melancholy, boredom. So there are a number of terms describing this is a risk for the individual.

ZOUMBA: - In the black African culture, our popular education, it is said that a child should never be inactive. He always has to move and move, we avoid he stays alone. And yet we push him to play with peers. The danger is to be alone.

AKS: Is doing nothing so dangerous?

ZOUMBA: - We could say that. It is considered dangerous. Being alone and free with nothing to do, leads to a bad mood, it "kills life" figuratively. Life is a conscious movement. It is the metaphor of the controller, the robot that acts mechanically, doing the same things over and over, without any fantasy. In Africa, we try to invent every day.

TK: In your theatrical performance, you have shown that loneliness in Africa has not existed.

ZOUMBA: - Yes, that is my assumption. It does not exist as such, because our whole life is based on the principle of community. If isolated, people wonder if we are normal. It detonates, it is against nature that an African withdraws from others, our society runs on the pace of Community. It may well be possible that you feel momentarily at ease in solitude, but people want to know why you retire. And then you still have to justify.

AKS: I want to ask you something in leisure behavior. You spoke of the habit of drinking tea together. Are there other practices in solitude?

ZOUMBA: - Yes. There is mostly individual meditation in prayer. We have not the tradition of writing, but we all read the Quran, because we are Muslims.

TK: Can we say then that reading the Quran is an expression of Entertainment? For many people?

ZOUMBA: - Yes, there are a lot of people who can read. You can read the Quran, even if you do not understand Arabic.

TK: Did you learn Arabic?

ZOUMBA: - No, unfortunately, I did not learn Arabic, but like most Senegalese, I learned the Quran "blindly" as they say. This is to say that without being able to translate, I can recite verses from the Quran that maintain my prayers and my Muslim facto condition. In the school where I teach, I have a colleague who, when he has a "free" moment, and despite having studied in a French classic, opens his Quran and retires to a corner. And then every time you can clearly see his happiness and peace.

TK: It would be a kind of loneliness?

ZOUMBA: - Yes. He managed to find his balance in the Quran, in meditation, it is a kind of hermit evolving in the group. Even the sound of the bell does not disturb him.

TK: What I find particularly interesting is that you have shown in speaking of the shepherds. In the mythical Arcadia pastoral novels I studied in my work, among other things, there are shepherds who sing near a fountain, they begin to dial talking about their unhappy love. Does that poetic vision of the shepherd with a flute reflect on you?

ZOUMBA: - Yes, almost all of them play flute. Tasty Peulh flute. In northern Senegal, on the border with Mauritania, there is an area called Walo, in the alluvial plain of the Senegal River, and just after FUTA, a very dry area, which already belongs to the Sahel and where the shepherd are living mainly with their herds. Every shepherd has a very special relationship with the sand. The sandy soil is his, he reigns over his animals that obey him. He speaks to them with his flute. The tunes that they play are always equal, because animals can all understand. "We're going down," "We will be back," "So we will go back home" "the grass is good today," etc.

TK: So, he plays the flute. Does he sing well ? Are there songs?

ZOUMBA: - Yes. He sings very well Peulh and there are plenty of songs on it. One could write a whole book, especially the Peulh herdsmen are nomads.

TK: are there many?

ZOUMBA: - Yes! There are very large Peulh poets. In these poems, many words come from Arabic because they live close to the border with Mauritania. The Peulh are a people of great poets. They engage more than anyone to contemplation.

But when I speak of the shepherd, I also think of fishers’ wives. St. Louis is a quintessential fishing area. Wherever you are at home, there is the river water and the sea, and there is fishing. In the morning all fishermen leaving the continent for the high seas. They can stay for up to fourteen days or four weeks. Often they are hired in large Korean ships and / or Japanese who exploit ignominiously. But even local fishermen sometimes stay for several days or a week at sea to return with full of fish canoes. So there is work for their wives that freeze, dry or smoke the fish and sell it at the market. H    owever when their husbands and son go to sea, all these poor women are alone. Then they meet. This is not an individual leisure, they stay late at the beaches to tell "stories of night." And during the day they are busy selling their fish caught by their men.

TK: But do men do not remain with their wives after several days of absence?

ZOUMBA: - Yes, but only at night, because the day the women go to the market.

TK: men and women therefore work alternately? When men are at sea, women tell stories; And when men return, women sell products on the market?

ZOUMBA: - Exactly. Incidentally, there is also an interesting observation regarding traditional festivals and ceremonies. Look, I'm not a fisherman, and I do not live in their neighborhood; if my wife has a baby, we normally celebrate baptism the eighth day after his birth. But in the fishing district, not necessarily. When a child is born, a committee should choose the date of Baptism to allow maximum men to be present. Now, if a week after the birth parents take to the celebration, they are free to do so, but then they will not have many guests because their colleagues were just fishing at sea. There are long periods breaks to keep all the celebrations, periods that take up to ten days.

AKS: I am interested in the value of work in your culture. They can quite be working and having fun. The work may not be considered contrary to leisure. What is the relationship between leisure and work?

ZOUMBA: - At home, we said that work is premium on everything. This is extremely important, because even in the Quran it is written - and the elderly are also saying - that God himself was never idle. To create different kind of people, God had to work. So they say: We must do everything to work, earn his bread by being always on. So if you're lazy, you appear as an impious.

AKS: It's very similar in our society. We have a strong work ethic and if anyone refuses to work, so ...

ZOUMBA: - This is laziness.

TK: Are there in your daily life, while working, retirement moments, meditation and contemplation, which are very much part of everyday life, and at the same time allow creativity?

ZOUMBA: - Well, I do not pretend to speak generally of Culture of Senegal or Africa, but to me personally. As I have already said-and it suits my nature poet - I maintain a direct and immediate relationship with my natural surroundings, this delight and beauty that is the Senegal River. For me, that river lives and breathes, has a meaning and even a soul, plays music and talks correctly. I feel that as an inspiration. I go to the edge of the water I feel immediately at ease, my desire came over me, I have the best intentions. I draw copious inspirations and I start to write. stopping by the river corresponds to my nature.

AKS: I understand. this is something universal or anthropological, it is quite characteristic, because often the water is indeed in the literature as a writing ink, waves and ocean have a vague link with the subject. What is for you personally, the best frame? We have, for example, solitude in the woods, or by standing on a hill with beautiful views of the surrounding area; so that is repeatedly illustrated in the literature. What about you personally?

ZOUMBA: - Personally, I think that the degree of leisure depends on the environment, whether immediate or far. Recreation is always determined in a space. I think about the shepherd. As long as he assimilates warm sand, it remains linked to its immediate environment. To tell him about leisure one must first talk to him about sand and flock.

TK: In the room, speaking of the relationship between time and space in otium, you announced an interesting cliché: "Europeans have the watchtime, Africans have the time itself." But how do Africans behave with time and space they also have, especially the nomads?

ZOUMBA: - What I saw looks amazing. Here in Freiburg, for example, I look at that room. Your streets are wide and spacious, well squared. they even have their own tracks for the tram; really a lot of space. If I am mentally contrast transfer in Senegal where I imagine a European road, I see that the road is closed because we occupy the whole and very fast. I'm pretty closed in a road without space, where everything is included.

TK: Is that your own idea?

ZOUMBA: - Yes, but it's usually like that. Senegal, St. Louis, Africa. There is a serious imbalance. We Africans have space. We can grow. Agriculture is the main activity of 75 to 80% of Africans who work hard in the fields, and yet fail to feed all of us.

We operate an extensive farming on large areas of barren sand. We have so much space that we know even in the utility. I mean literally we occupy space, rather than confined space to put something to plant so that it grows well.

Rural houses usually operate at the pace of the community. These are concessions. All members live in a house. For example, my daughter is getting married and her husband came to live with us. And my eldest son also has his wife in the house It's usually like that. This means that we are doomed to live all together. We eat together around a large bowl.

Here in Europe, when you sit at the table for dinner, there is the time and place of meeting where everyone tells the experiences of the day. You are all expected to speak, so you lift any information. With us, we do not talk while eating or only one person is authorized to speak around the bowl, the head of the family. It’s an unwritten law in force, with strict hierarchies.

TK: When can we talk then?

ZOUMBA: - There are moments that are destined to the verb, especially at night. Because the day is often very hot under our tropics. The nights are cooler, you can leave the "pen" and chatting intergroup So you go out and it's time to tell stories, play games riddles, proverbs ... It also trains them small groups where we tell what happened during the day. It also engages love.

TK: And when do you say your stories?

ZOUMBA: - Usually in the evening. My children are waiting for me after dinner. But I start spontaneously. And if I do not do my wife does, or my mother

AKS: Some philosophers say that the experience makes you happy. The appearance of the luck plays an important understanding for our role in recreation. is it also for you, to relate leisure and happiness?

ZOUMBA - Luck is a relative term when one plays to lose or win. In Senegal happiness means for a man to have a woman who has children whom belong to the whole community. Unlike Europe, where many are single and do not want children. The important diet is also involved in the criteria of happiness. In the drama I played yesterday at the “Frankreich Zentrum”, the actor said "there is no issue as important in Africa as food. "If it is assured, you are happy, because we know it is for many a big problem. Rarely an African, an average Senegalese is certain that he can feed his family. Because in Africa, families are very large. The problem is that I have to work to feed twenty persons. I myself am there, my wife and my children are there, but my parents. Several people have entrusted to me; Some live with me permanently, others come for lunch or dinner. This brings the concerns and problems.

TK: I have a question in relation to the audience. In Europe, the main readership of literature since the 18th century, is made up of women. And in Senegal who read the most? Men or women?

ZOUMBA: - For us, it's the opposite. This can be illustrated using the example of the Quran. I'm sorry I still have to say, but in our culture, women have long been underestimated. The first readers of the Quran were men. They have read and studied the Quran and have unfortunately generally denatured by interpreting it in the sense of dominance over women. They legitimized a kind of masculinity of the sacred book, Women are not entitled to read. Quran was the only education manual, had in fact no right to education. There is of course no justification for this abhorrent aberration.

AKS: Which kind of thing do you think specifically in your free time? I have found in my research that the poet, the loafer, engineering are mainly male characters. The principle of the dominant male in Europe is with the woman for playtime. You who travel a lot, what do you think about it?

ZOUMBA: - As for me personally, I see that the woman is still perceived primarily as an image of beauty and that's fair. She is very beautiful. I see her as fair, strong, enduring and courageous human being. I do not impose my writings into a role model for women or for men. I write, precisely I only write.

TK: What you are experiencing during your stay in Freiburg, have you detected there the actual moments of leisure?

ZOUMBA: - Yes. And it was strange. I was with friends. We left the tram to walk a little and then we found ourselves with a couple homeless into their wine bottles. One of them was strong enough and thick. I got their picture taken with him. I had the impression that these people felt at ease. The evening perhaps, when it's cold and homeless, when they have to sleep, they suffer no doubt, but in this moment - because we are talking of that exact moment in the here and the now - these people were nice. The hobby can be drinking wine, and for others to sit and observe the landscape, or other passions to others. I also saw someone who was playing his guitar, and really seemed happy, another person who was looking and listening. Without giving him money, but remaining in a contemplative state, he admired the musician and one felt that he was happy.

TK: Is it something possible in St. Louis? Are there people who will get on the road and making music?

ZOUMBA: - Always. This defines life in St. Louis. In St. Louis, people are not aware that they can even mess around with their music. Besides this interferes with religious songs. It is almost allowed to disturb, because we always put music loudly, and sometimes with an indescribable cacophony. We promote our samples on the road and it's a problem. But we have already said, there is only the road to invade. The space is always open.

Hana Geroldova : Vous avez récemment publié un roman et un recueil de poésie, préférez-vous écrire en vers ou en prose?

-          Votre question est plus précisément si je me sens plus à l’aise dans le récit ou dans les textes en prose. Avec le succès de mon roman Les Anges Blessés dès sa parution, les gens s’attendaient à ce que je m'incruste dans ce genre, mais en tout auteur il y a cette sympathique bataille d’influence des genres. Notre réponse se trouve déjà écrite dans le recueil Arc en Fleuve, avec le poème particulier intitulé « Le second souffle ». En témoigne cet extrait :

« Le souffle qui visite l'artiste

La forme seule en est nouvelle

Car le mot lui-même nous choisit.

Pénétrant la volupté du prêtre

Il trône en roi dans notre mémoire

Dont il se fait ombilic du temple ».

Je me demande parfois si j’ai plusieurs muses, une pour chaque genre, ou si c’est la même qui me revient toujours sous des atours différents. Et puisque dans mon cursus personnel, je reste largement influencé par le théâtre, je crois sincèrement que si j’assassinais toutes mes muses, je resterais encore suffisamment d’esprit créatif pour m’inscrire dans la dramaturgie.

Il n’en demeure pas moins que votre question est très pertinente, en ce sens que, du moins dans mon pays le Sénégal, le lectorat se rue surtout sur les récits directs ou dialogués au détriment de la poésie. C’est donc commercial et alimentaire que pour être relativement sûr d’être lu, nos écrivains s’identifient surtout comme des romanciers. Moi j'écris exactement comme me dictent mes sens.

Votre cheminement vers la littérature a néanmoins commencé dans le milieu théâtral n'est-ce pas?

-          On peut le dire car déjà à l’école primaire j’étais une petite star du théâtre. C’était la belle époque des compétitions théâtrales interscolaires. J’ai continué au Lycée en jouant régulièrement dans la troupe du Lycée Charles de Gaulle de St-Louis et après le bac j’ai suivi une formation d’animateur culturel dans la section Art Dramatique du Conservatoire National.

Mon environnement immédiat n’est pas étranger à ces prédispositions car mon défunt père était clarinettiste et ma mère adorait chanter, danser et jouer du théâtre et de la guitare. Dans cette ambiance, tout enfant que j’étais, je déclamais déjà les textes des grands classiques de Molière, Corneille et autres Racine.

Et enfin il y a le théâtre populaire sénégalais organisé en des joutes régulières et très serrées, sur l’ensemble du territoire national. Le metteur en scène y doit toujours créer lui-même sa pièce, je suis alors naturellement devenu scénariste, pour ne pas dire « dramaturge populaire ». Je vous renvoie à ma contribution dans l’ouvrage anthologique de l’Académie Zoa. (« De l’instinct théâtral –Le théâtre se ressource en Afrique – », Harmattan, 2002 )

C’est donc tout naturellement qu’aujourd’hui je parcours des pays pour jouer mais aussi pour animer des stages de conte et théâtre contemporain (France, Ghana, Allemagne, Maroc,Sénégal…)

Hana Geroldova :Votre pièce la plus célèbre s'appelle « Rêve de France ». Pourquoi rêve-t-on de la France au Sénégal?

-        Pour la simple raison que le sénégalais EST aussi français. Il l’est, autant dans son histoire que dans son vécu quotidien. Il ne peut y couper, c’est inscrit dans sa mémoire individuelle et collective, le fruit d’une cohabitation passée, présente et future. Je ne suis pas de ces éternels revanchards qui imputent au présent les fautes du passé. Même si le wolof est une langue bien structurée et très dynamique, tout sénégalais moyennement instruit parlera mieux la langue française car il y a des mots qui n’y existent qu’en français.

L’avenir n’est pas bien certain au Sénégal. La France est bien une réalité sénégalaise, particulièrement dans ma ville St-Louis où les infrastructures et les superstructures rappellent ce devoir de mémoire. L’étudiant ambitieux qui veut y poursuivre ses études supérieures et le chômeur qui tente d’atteindre ses côtes synonymes d’espoir, ne sont pas suffisamment instruits de la crise en Europe.

Pour en revenir à la pièce Rêve de France, son succès est phénoménal car alors que je ne l’ai écrite qu’en 2009 elle a déjà été jouée plus de 50 fois et dans une vingtaine de pays, tant qu'elle en éclipse toutes mes autres créations, ce qui est tout bonheur. Pourquoi cet engouement des opérateurs à la programmer partout? Parce qu’elle fait encore malheureusement l’actualité politique internationale, et de plus belle. Je n’y justifie ni n'y condamne l’émigration clandestine des africains dans ces bateaux suicidaires, mais pour autant le monde entier doit connaître tous les élans de cette affaire, ses motivations, ses étapes. Le théâtre est le meilleur moyen de s’en instruire en en riant.

Hana Geroldová: : Votre pièce suivante s'appelle Rêve d'Afrique, doit-on comprendre que c'est l'inverse de Rêve de France?

-          En réalité c’est sur commande spéciale de l’organisateur du Forum HOSTELYA, pour promouvoir la Destination Sénégal que j’ai écrit « Rêve d’Afrique » pour présenter un visage poétique de nos pays, avec comme prétexte le Sénégal et particulièrement ma ville St-Louis, qui s’y nomme La « Poemie ». Car le tourisme, secteur économique de première importance, n’a jamais connu pareille crise, avec l’apparition du Virus Ebola en Afrique de l’Ouest, la phobie grandissante du terrorisme et d’autres problèmes plus internes liés à la sécurité et à l’entretien du cadre de vie. Je me suis senti le devoir de réagir quand notre réputation de terre d’accueil est menacée.

Alors dans « Rêve d’Afrique » je mets en scène un touriste néophyte qui y atterrit pour la  première fois, pour montrer l’autre Afrique, la vraie Afrique celle-là, l’Afrique nue, celle de la débrouille quotidienne certes, celle du temps suspendu, mais surtout de la grâce de ses filles, celle du soleil et des sourires, des plages et flamands roses, celle de l’art de recevoir. Parce que juste après le ciel, Saint-Louis de Sénégal est le plus beau des royaumes.

Hana Geroldová : À part l'émigration clandestine, quel est d'après vous un autre thème majeur qui fait tourner la société sénégalaise contemporaine?

-          Deux sujets qui m’assaillent sans cesse… Je n’aime pas beaucoup parler politique car je suis artiste, et être artiste est déjà un choix politique sérieux. Pour autant, je vous annonce ici qu’en ce moment j’ai mal et j’ai peur, si mal et si peur que tout mon être frémit et tressaille. Mal de constater au 21e siècle la survie difficile des enfants talibés livrés à eux-mêmes, exploités par des adultes conscients. Peur que nous survienne un « printemps wolof » parce que les grandes multinationales capitalistes qui phagocytent les régimes, débarquent déjà dans mon pays où l’on vient de découvrir du pétrole. Je crains que ces valeurs matérielles n’aient raison de la sagesse légendaire de mon peuple. Oui je souffre de ma honte et j’ai honte de ma peur.

Hana Geroldova : Comptez vous utiliser un de ces sujets dans votre œuvre? Quels sont vos projets littéraires?

-          Pour la question de cette enfance déshéritée des talibés errants, je pense que je ne l’ai jamais quittée dans mes écrits, je l’ai régulièrement dénoncée. Si dans "Les Anges Blessés", elle n’y figure qu’en des parenthèses à effet subliminal, dans le recueil de poèmes par contre j’y consacre tout un texte intitulé « A rebrousse-vie », pour bien dire de l’hypocrisie des hommes se complaisant que l’enfant roi vive à l’envers des normes.

Et pour les dissensions sociales nées de cette nouvelle donne qu’est le pétrole, je suis entrain de prospecter convenablement en observant les hommes, en les étudiant  comme dans un gigantesque laboratoire. Oui mon livre en chantier s’intitule Le Petit Filao, un long conte initiatique racontant les pérégrinations d’un petit garçon abandonné, parcourant le pays pour y rencontrer ses génies bienfaisants.

Pourquoi le conte ? Parce que je suis conteur avant tout. Je participe à des rencontres internationales autour de ce genre et je viens de créer au Sénégal "Les COCONS", l'Association des Compagnons Conteurs du Nord,  qui organise chaque année un festival international denommé « Ndar Palabrages ». Ma plume sera toujours engagée dans le combat pour l’équité sociale. Ou elle ne sera pas.

Hana Geroldova : En parlant des rêves, quel est le votre? De quoi rêvez vous ?

-          En m’engageant en poésie, j’ai décidé de ne plus voir que le beau. Ma muse s’est imposée sous les traits de la célèbre plasticienne sénégalo-marocaine Soukeina Khalil. Nous avons elle et moi sinon les mêmes yeux, du moins le même regard. Elle peint l’humain et j’écris cet humain, ou l’inverse. Elle crie et j’écris. A partir de là tous mes rêves ont changé, je me vois toujours revisitant le monde pour proposer son nouveau réajustement, partout : Europe, Afrique, Amérique, Asie, Océanie, villes et villages. Comme une douce mission sublime à laquelle je serais inéluctablement astreint. Mon rêve est d’effacer le triste rictus pour révéler le sourire de cet enfant-talibé devenu grand. Je rêve de ne jamais m’arrêter. Je rêve d’une humanité, d'un monde coloré qui m’agrée et m’assimile.

Hana Geroldova : Et: vous avez dit que le Sénégal c'est la France ; croyez-vous que l'on puisse dire la même chose sur les autres ex-colonies françaises d’Afrique ?

-          Non. Absolument pas. C’est plus spécial au Sénégal. Jusqu’à un certain degré nous avons une histoire commune avec les ivoiriens, maliens ou autres burkinabés. Un passé commun marqué par la traite négrière et la colonisation. Pourquoi même leurs propres soldats étaient appelés des tirailleurs « sénégalais » ? Parce que même si nous n’étions pas comme l’Algérie un département français, ni même un protectorat comme le Maroc ou la Tunisie, le Sénégal était quand-même la colonie la plus assimilée d’Afrique Noire. A St-Louis fut créée la première école française laïque ; et aujourd’hui ce riche patrimoine matériel comme le pont Faidherbe ou les bâtiments architecturaux de l’île impriment en nous un comportement peu ou prou français. Il y a en nous tous cette féconde dualité, ce n’est pas un complexe que de le dire. Personnellement je redeviens français quand je gravis les 511 m du pont Faidherbe, c’est comme si une parcelle de l’hexagone avait été installée chez nous. Alors il faut nécessairement que se joue le jeu inverse.

Hana Geroldová: Votre roman Les Anges Blessés est-il aussi un roman engagé ?

-          Mon écriture est toujours d’une plume militante, autant que ma voix et mon corps tout entier. Je ne vois pas comment une création artistique non picturale pourrait s’inscrire dans l’art pour l’art. On agit d’abord parce qu’on est humain et pour ce qu’on l’est. Certains peuvent prétendre proposer des solutions, d’autres s’en tiennent à dénoncer les tares de la société. Moi je raconte une histoire d’un ton universel.

Dans tous les pays du monde, même dans ceux décrits comme des paradis terrestres, certaines catégories de populations sont encore injustement dépréciées, rejetées, snobées. La société humaine est globalement une bonne chose tant qu’elle s’emploie à rendre possible et agréable la vie commune. Mais en même temps cette société crée partout d’injustes revers avec ses organisations religieuses ou politiques. Il est des tabous sociaux énormes et dont on ne parle pas. Le plus souvent on ne s’en rend pas compte car on est dedans, et on continue naturellement à jouer le jeu social hypocrite. Dans ma relative liberté d’écrire, je veux tout dire, ne me fixer nulle barrière.

Heureusement que je ne suis pas peintre, car alors je pense que je peindrais tellement le noir qu’il ne resterait peut-être plus grand chose de la nuit.

Hana Geroldová: Est-ce que vos tournées consacrées au théâtre vont se poursuivre?

-          Le théâtre est ma vie, mon art premier, mon inspiration et mon expiration à la fois. Mes tournées internationales sont tout ce qui me nourrit spirituellement. Mon agent en France s’occupe d’organiser un parcours équilibré et je pense que nous profiterons surtout de la Semaine de la Solidarité Internationale, pour laquelle des contacts sérieux sont enclenchés du côté de Marseille, Madrid, Barcelone, Clichy-la-Garenne et autres Paris.

Hana Geroldová: Envisagez- vous de venir à Prague?

-          Là, l’émotion me pénètre et me voici tout-chose. Quand ma maison fut inondée et que je fus obligé d’évacuer ma famille, des « anges » de Prague m’ont permis de construire un nouveau bâtiment plus en hauteur. Venir jouer à Prague est depuis dix ans mon souhait le plus ardent. J’y compte des amitiés des plus fertiles. Parfois je suis assez près, en Allemagne, en Belgique, en Hollande et cela me déçoit de ne pouvoir me glisser jusqu’en République Tchèque. J'espère qu'une belle structure artistique m'y invitera.

Hana Geroldová:Vous enseignez depuis 1990, pouvez-vous dire que vos étudiants ont changéavec le temps et comment ?

-          La vraie paye, le vrai salaire d’un enseignant, c’est le constat de la réussite de ses élèves. C’est un plaisir incalculable, le sentiment du devoir accompli. Ma moto m’a été offerte par un de mes anciens élèves, devenu cadre d’entreprise.

Même si la pédagogie est une science, on sait que dans la réalité chaque enseignant a son rythme propre, sa démarche personnelle, son propre art. Alors autant j’ai pu admirer certains de mes maîtres et professeurs, autant je constate l’effet que j’ai produit sur mes étudiants du lycée, du collège et de l’Université, qui réussissent leur insertion dans la vie active. Car j’ai effectivement exercé ma profession dans ces trois univers.

Dans tous les établissements où j’ai été affecté, en sus de mes cours réguliers, je me suis occupé des activités para et péri scolaires : le foyer socio-éducatif des élèves, la bibliothèque, la cellule de médiation avec les parents, les programmes de partenariat et de jumelage, … et cela a toujours fonctionné correctement. Je ne suis pas partisan des cours trop rigides, statiques, même en classe de mathématiques ou d’autres sciences dites exactes Comment par exemple en littérature pourrait-on animer un cours de conte, de théâtre ou d’orthographe, si on n’a pas soi-même une diction correcte ? . Je suis convaincu que dans chaque école on devrait disposer d’un professionnel de l’animation culturelle car la vie d’un établissement scolaire dépend aussi de ce cadre immatériel. Ou alors que tous les enseignants suivent une formation dans ces métiers de l’animation culturelle.

A un autre niveau moins conventionnel, j'ai formé des centaines d'artistes et je suis tout fier que dans un pays comme le Sénégal, ils réussissent à en vivre.
